Mensa Testing Information – Sangamon Valley Mensa

How to Qualify for Mensa

Individuals may qualify for membership by providing prior evidence.  A list of common intelligence tests and qualifying scores can be found on Mensa's national web site at www.us.mensa.org.  In the absence of prior evidence, individuals may take the American Mensa Admission Test.  This is a battery of two tests featuring questions involving logic and deductive reasoning.  The test session is supervised by a certified Mensa proctor and takes approximately 2 hours.

Making a Reservation for Testing

If you would like to reserve a testing space or request further information, send an e-mail (preferred) to our proctor, Dwight Homann, at WaverlyResearch@aol.com or call him at (217) 435-8311 during office hours (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday).  Reservations are REQUIRED not later than the Thursday before the test in order to ensure that sufficient testing materials and adequate space are available.

Testing Requirements

Individuals must be at least 14 years of age to take the American Mensa Admission Test.  Test takers must present a valid photo ID (driver's license or school ID) at the time of testing.

A $40 testing fee will be collected at the time of testing.  A personal check is preferred (for payment to “American Mensa, Ltd.”) but cash, a money order, or a credit card may also be used.

The standard American Mensa Admission Test may only be taken one time by each applicant. Should you become ill at the last minute, do not come - you want to be at your best.  However, be sure to let the proctor know later that you wish to remain on the notification list.

Please note: The regular Mensa test is designed for people over 14 years of age who are fluent in English.  If regular testing would be challenging for you because of cultural or language differences, ADHD, learning disabilities, or other problems, you might want to take the alternative nonverbal, untimed test (a language-free measure of abstract problem-solving ability).  Please contact our proctor for help with this option.

If you are under 18, one of your parents must sign a permission slip provided by the Proctor Coordinator, so be sure to contact Dwight in advance to make arrangements. Or, an even better option would be to bring a parent with you to the testing session.

Scheduled Testing Sessions

Sangamon Valley Mensa will offer the Mensa Admission Test on Saturday morning, 20 October 2007 in the Carnegie South Room (1st Floor) of the Lincoln Library, 326 South 7th Street (at the intersection of 7th and Capitol Streets), Springfield, IL  62701.  We will begin the check-in process at 9:30 a.m.  Since this is a timed test, participants must be present at that time.  Our subsequent tentative test dates (all at 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday, at a location to be determined in Springfield) are as follows:

20 October 2007 (National Test Day)

            19 January 2008

            19 April 2008

            19 July 2008

18 Oct 2008 (National Test Day)

What to bring

The test should take 2 hours or less.  We try to have the room open 20 minutes ahead of time, so come early and look through our publications.  Dress in layers, since room temperatures vary.

Bring the following to the test:

·       A photo ID.

·       Several number 2 pencils.

·       Payment of the $40 fee, as noted above.

·       A permission slip signed by a parent if you are under 18, or bring your parent along!

·       You are welcome to bring a beverage in a quiet, lidded container.

We wish you well on our test.  Your results will come to you only, from American Mensa, in about two weeks.  However, the IQ and percentile numbers can no longer be given, since we are not a "licensed testing facility."  Your qualifying score will enable you to enjoy the many member benefits listed on the Mensa Web site.
